Petula Clark

Sally "Petula" Clark, born 15 November 1932, is a British singer, actress, and songwriter whose career has spanned over 85 years, making her the longest-serving British entertainer. She began as a child performer on BBC Radio during the Second World War and became a star in the 1950s with hits like "The Little Shoemaker." Clark found international fame, recording successfully in French, German, Italian, and Spanish, with major songs such as "Sailor," "Chariot," and "Prends mon cœur." Her breakthrough in the United States came in the mid-1960s, where she became known as "the First Lady of the British Invasion" thanks to chart-topping singles like "Downtown," "My Love," "I Know a Place," "This Is My Song," and "Don't Sleep in the Subway." Many of her hits were collaborations with Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent. Clark won multiple MIDEM awards for her worldwide sales and it is estimated she has sold between 70 and 100 million records. In addition to her recording success, Clark starred in the film Finian's Rainbow, earning a Golden Globe nomination, and appeared in stage musicals such as The Sound of Music, Sunset Boulevard, and Mary Poppins, receiving BAFTA nominations for her performances. She also made a memorable Broadway debut in Blood Brothers alongside David Cassidy.
