Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musician of the late Baroque era, born in 1685 in Eisenach and passing away in 1750. Renowned for his extraordinary skill in counterpoint and harmonic invention, Bach created a vast and influential body of music. His works span orchestral pieces like the Brandenburg Concertos, solo instrumental masterpieces such as the cello suites and violin partitas, keyboard works including the Goldberg Variations and The Well-Tempered Clavier, and major choral compositions like the St Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Bach spent his career as a church musician and court composer in various German cities, most notably Leipzig, where he served as Thomaskantor and wrote much of his most important music for church and academic life. Beyond his own era, Bach’s music grew in stature, especially after the 19th-century Bach Revival, earning him lasting recognition as one of the greatest composers in Western music history. His compositions, characterized by rich polyphony and emotional depth, continue to inspire musicians and audiences worldwide. Four of his sons also became notable composers, further extending his musical legacy.
