Donald Cherry was a groundbreaking American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and multi-instrumentalist. Rising to prominence in the late 1950s, he was a central figure in Ornette Coleman’s trailblazing free jazz groups, appearing on influential albums such as The Shape of Jazz to Come and Free Jazz. Throughout his career, Cherry collaborated with major jazz innovators, including John Coltrane, Sun Ra, and Albert Ayler. As a bandleader, he released his notable debut album Complete Communion in 1966. In the 1970s, Cherry expanded his sound by blending jazz with African, Middle Eastern, and Hindustani music, notably on his album Brown Rice. He was also part of the adventurous world music trio Codona. Recognized for his fearless innovation, Cherry is regarded as one of the most influential jazz musicians of his era.
