Metric

Metric

Metric is a Canadian indie rock band formed in Toronto in 1998 by Emily Haines and James Shaw. After starting as a duo called Mainstream and releasing an early EP, they became Metric and expanded the lineup with Joshua Winstead and Joules Scott-Key. The band is known for blending rock with electronic influences, highlighted by Haines' distinct vocals and Shaw's guitar work. Metric's debut album, Old World Underground, Where Are You Now, arrived in 2003, followed by Live It Out in 2005, which gained critical acclaim and award nominations. They continued to build momentum with albums like Fantasies in 2009, which won multiple Juno Awards, and Synthetica in 2012. Subsequent records include Pagans in Vegas, Art of Doubt, Formentera, and Formentera II, showcasing their evolving sound and consistent presence in the indie music scene. Metric remains one of Canada’s most influential alternative bands, ranking 41st on Rolling Stone's list of the 50 Greatest Canadian Artists of All Time.
