Traditionally, most distortion units wake up and shape the amplitude of the signal in different ways to create a coarser sound. Instead, phase distortion allows the signal to modulate the self-phase, which essentially leads to something similar to FM feedback. This way, you can add an FM touch to any sound to get a sweet 80's atmosphere or dirty dubstep bass.
