Kim Gordon is an influential American musician, singer, and songwriter best known as a founding member of Sonic Youth, where she played bass, guitar, and provided vocals. Raised in Los Angeles after being born in Rochester, New York, Gordon studied art at Otis College before moving to New York City, where she co-founded Sonic Youth in 1981 with Thurston Moore. With Sonic Youth, she helped define alternative rock through a pioneering blend of noise and experimental music, contributing to over a dozen acclaimed albums, including those released on the DGC label in the 1990s. Following the band’s breakup in 2011, Gordon pursued new creative avenues, forming the experimental duo Body/Head with Bill Nace and the project Glitterbust with Alex Knost. She launched her solo career in 2019 with the album No Home Record, followed by The Collective in 2024, which earned her Grammy nominations. Beyond music, Gordon is celebrated as a visual artist, record producer, and fashion designer, notably launching the brand X-Girl in 1993. She has also acted in films and television and published a memoir, Girl in a Band, in 2015. Gordon’s innovative career has made her a pioneering figure in both music and art.
